The Cistercian monastery Volkenroda was founded in 1130.
In 1548, the monastery was closed and converted into a baronial office.
Until 1969 parts of the church were used for service. Subsequently the church was closed due to dilapidation and abandoned to decay.
The church with its choir, nave and two new side apsis was restored for service and concerts after its safeguard
and the convent building in danger of collapse.
According to the intended use as an European Youth Education Centre the new convent building was erected as a meeting and education site.
The office building was equipped with maintenance facilities and accommodation as well as flats for the monks and nuns.
